Science Olympiad at Twin Peaks Middle School
"A Science Olympiad competition is like an academic track meet—teams from different schools gather together on a specific day and compete against one another in a variety of science events.  Science Olympiads are held all over the country, and individual regions have their own guidelines.  In the San Diego Region, each participating school may enter up to 6 teams, with 15 students on each team.  Twin Peaks Middle School is generally very well represented, with 5-6 teams from the school going to the regional competition each year.  The TPMS teams are independent of one another, which means that they compete against each other as well as against teams from other San Diego area schools.

There are 23 different science events in a Science Olympiad, and the subject matter varies from year to year, reflecting the ever-changing nature of research in such fields as genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, engineering technology, and music theory.  By including events from all disciplines, Science Olympiads are structured to appeal to a wide cross-section of students.  Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation.  Students, teachers, parents, principals, and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal.

The ability to work with others is a skill that is essential to many scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad events are designed to promote teamwork and encourage group learning.  In the event known as “Elevated Bridge,” for example, an engineering whiz kid and a woodshop enthusiast could team up and work their way to a gold medal.  Similarly, a talented builder and a writer with a good science vocabulary could work together to excel in “Write It, Do It,” one of Science Olympiad’s most popular events.
